The Panzer IV was the workhorse of the German armored forces during World War II. It saw action on all fronts and was continually upgraded throughout the war. Responding to developments in Allied Armor, the Panzer IV Ausf F2 variant was the first to receive the long-barrel KwK 40 L/43 75mm cannon, which could fire a high velocity shell capable of knocking out the Russian T-34 and American M3 and M4 tanks. This gun remained the standard main armament on all subsequent models of the Panzer IV (Ausf F2 through J) and this configuration saw action in North Africa, the Mediterranean, Russia, and Western Europe.
