About the Sturmpanzerwagen A7V:

The A7V, or Sturmpanzerwagen A7V was a heavy tank initially introduced by Germany in 1918 during World War I. They were used in action from March to October 1918, and were the only tanks produced by Germany in World War I to be used in combat.  Project plans for creating this early tank were bold – a mass of around 30 tons, and capabilities of crossing ditches up to 1.5 meters wide, and having an armament including cannon at the front, as well as 6 machine guns, two per side and two on the rear.

Top speeds of the Sturmpanzerwagen A7V were capped at 12km/h, and the running gear was based on the Holt tractor. The first prototype was completed and tested on April 30th, 1917.  A wooden mockup of a final version was completed and demonstrated in May 1917.  The most common machine guns used in this tank were the MG08. Two people were assigned to the tank – the commander and driver. The remaining crew were pulled from numerous other units, often based on machine-gun operation skills.
