About the M3 Lee – WWII Allied Medium Tank:

Named after the well-known Civil War General Robert E. Lee. The M3 “Lee” and its variants were some of the first American tanks to enter World War II. Equipped with a reliable 340 horsepower Continental engine, the Lee was first deployed to England and the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program. When the Lee performed poorly against the Panzer III and IV tanks in North Africa, they were either repurposed as armored recovery vehicles or sent to less-active fronts. Many would be sent to the Pacific Theater as the Japanese did not have the same heavy armor deployed by the Germans.

Deployed to North Africa, its Continental engine performed well under the harsh desert climate. However, the inexperience of American troops against the forces of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, and the complex operation of the Lee, resulted in heavy losses. The M3 Lee would eventually be replaced by the M4 Sherman in the European Theater.
