2161-Action-Webcard-710

About the F6F Hellcat:

The F6F Hellcat was the successor to the F4F Wildcat series of carrier aircraft used by the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater of WWII. The intention of this aircraft was to counter the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M Zero. Hellcats are credited with destroying a total of 5,223 enemy aircraft while in service.

During the Battle of the Philippine Sea, Navy fighter pilots shot down nearly 300 enemy aircraft in one day. The Hellcat produced more fighter aces than any other aircraft during WWII. The Hellcat proved invaluable as the US Navy conducted its operations across the Pacific Ocean. It is often noted that the appearance of the Hellcat had a significant impact in turning the tide to war in favor of American forces.
