About the Challenger II – Main Battle Tank:
Built by BAE Systems, the Challenger II is the most recent British main battle tank. The tank is armed with an L20 120mm rifled tank gun, although the British military has conducted trials with the Rheinmetall L55 smoothbore gun. Defense features include Chobham armor, L8 smoke grenade dischargers, and nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) protection.
Developed in 1997, the Challenger first saw operational service in Bosnia and Kosovo. It was later deployed in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, helping to support ground troops in engagements like Basra. Several Challenger IIs were attacked with IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), machine guns, and RPGs (Rocket-Propelled Grenades), which had little effect against the heavily-armored tank. This demonstrated the Challenger II’s capabilities in combat, especially survival against antitank weapons.
