“Amateurs talk about tactics, but professionals study logistics.”
– Attributed to Gen. Robert H. Barrow, USMC
Prior to D-Day, the French Resistance and Allied bombing had effectively dismantled the rail system in northern France to hinder the German ability to resupply. While this campaign was successful, it also prevented the Allied use of the rail system after they established a base of operations in Normandy. As the railway system was under repair, an emergency solution was needed to resupply troops quickly moving inland.
Operated from August through November 1944, the Red Ball Express was developed to deliver the required supplies to rapidly advancing Allied divisions. The Express involved a massive 24-hour operation capable of delivering the required 800 tons of daily supplies needed per division. The Allied war machine also required almost a million gallons of fuel daily to continue the offensive. The Army employed the use of the 2 ½ ton CCKW truck to accomplish this monumental task. The credit for this logistics miracle goes primarily to the soldiers of the Transportation Corps, often working 22 hour shifts over the course of several months. Due to racial unit segregation, a majority of these men were African-American.
Records indicate that over 75% of the truck drivers in the Corps were African-American soldiers. Many had never driven a truck before. Despite receiving only a few hours of training, they drove day and night on narrow roads through bad weather to deliver badly-needed supplies. It is estimated that over 900 trucks were moving on the Express at any given time. Around 5,400 trucks were involved in the operation, delivering over 400,000 tons of ammunition, food, clean water, and fuel to the front.

About the Stryker – Armored Fighting Vehicle:
The Stryker family of armored vehicles consists of lightly armored eight-wheeled carriers that can be fitted with several different attachments. Among the variants, the M1126 ICV acts as a primary personnel carrier, capable of deploying nine soldiers and accommodating a crew of two. The M1126 may be equipped with either an M2HB machine gun or an MK19 grenade launcher for defensive fire. Other variants of the Stryker include the M1127 Reconnaissance Vehicle, M1128 Mobile Gun System, M1129 Mortar Carrier, and M1130 Command Vehicle. The Stryker first entered service in Kuwait in November 2002 and saw combat during the US-led Iraq War of 2003.
Lightly armored vehicles often struggle with striking a balance between speed, armor, and armament. Much like the M1 Abrams of the 1980s, the Stryker is constantly updated and fixed as problems arise with its design. Reports show that this vehicle performs well in its primary role of protecting and deploying troops into combat areas. The Stryker’s speed allows it to move in and out of these areas quickly, minimizing risk to both the crew and ground troops.

When the fascist Grand Council met on the morning of July 25, 1943, they voted Benito Mussolini out of power.
That’s right. Voted.
This comical end to the fascist dictator was due to lack of meaningful ambition on Mussolini’s part. Although he had been in power as il Duce (the leader) since 1925, he had failed to sell fascism the same way Hitler had sold it to the German people in the 1930s. In his dream of a new Roman Empire, the Duce had inadequately mobilized his nation for war and was not prepared for the seemingly endless resources afforded to the Allies.
This lack of foresight is common among dictators. The allure of power is often blinding to reality. Much like Hitler, Mussolini made fatal errors in waging war against a determined enemy. Neither dictator anticipated the resistance of the Red Army at Stalingrad or the resolve of Britain against almost impossible odds. The defeat at Stalingrad had resulted in the complete destruction of the Italian Army on the Eastern Front. After the Allied landing at Sicily on July 10, the Grand Council was forced to take action.
The Grand Council, which had not met since 1939, now looked to salvage what was left of their small country. In 1943, with coal, oil and food in short supply, the Italian public began openly expressing their disdain with the Duce. Realizing the facts, the Grand Council looked to craft an armistice with the Allies. Following his meek acceptance of the Council’s decision, Mussolini was arrested.
Although he was rescued by the Waffen-SS and charged by Hitler to continue the war in northern Italy, the anticlimactic end of this would-be Roman Emperor was completed with his capture and execution in 1945.
The United States Marine Corps has a long and proud history of serving the United States, going back to 1775. US Marines fought at notable battles in both world wars, including Belleau Wood in 1918 and Iwo Jima in 1945.

About the M1A2 Abrams – Main Battle Tank:
The M1 Abrams is the current main battle tank (MBT) deployed by the United States Army, US Marine Corps and several allied nations around the world. It is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Chief of Staff of the US Army. Abrams was the commander of operations during the Vietnam War and also served in Patton’s Third Army during World War II.
The origins of the M1 date back to a joint US-West German tank program during the 1960s. While this project was eventually canceled, the technology developed was used in the German Leopard II and the American M1 Abrams MBTs. The M1 Abrams introduced many innovative features such as an aircraft turbine powerpack, composite “Chobham” armor, and ammunition stowage separated from the crew compartment.
When the Abrams’ original 105mm rifled main gun barrel was replaced with the 120mm smoothbore gun developed for the Leopard II, the tank was re-designated the M1A1. A program to further improve the Abrams was introduced in 1992 and the designation was changed to M1A2. These improvements include separate thermal sights for the commander and the TUSK (Tactical Urban Survival Kit).
The Abrams was combat-tested during Operation Desert Storm, outperforming the Russian T-72s of the Iraqi Army. Improvements continue to be made to the Abrams to keep up with technological advances and changing battlefield conditions.

On the morning of July 21st, 1861, Union artillery opened fire across Bull Run Creek.
As the commander of Union forces, General Irvin McDowell was hesitant to engage Confederate forces. Although both armies were inexperienced, attempting to maneuver and position unseasoned troops in an offensive was difficult and dangerous. Confederates forces, commanded by General P.G.T. Beauregard, had the advantage of remaining on the defensive for the opening of the battle.
McDowell enjoyed early success, sending his forces across Sudley Ford and smashing into the Confederate left flank, pushing them back to Henry Hill. Knowing that Confederate reinforcements were about to attack the Union right flank, Confederate General Thomas J. Jackson organized a staunch defense of Henry Hill with his Virginian men, halting the Union advance and earning him the nickname “Stonewall.” Beauregard’s Confederates broke the Union right flank, causing Union forces to retreat in mass confusion and turning the battle into a rout. Retreating soldiers would not stop until they reached the safety of Washington D.C.
The total defeat of Union forces at Manassas startled even foreign nations. In his narrative The Civil War: Volume One, Fort Sumter to Perryville, writer Shelby Foote quotes a British publication to illustrate the mood, writing: “One English journalist at least believed that he could guess what was in store. ‘So short lived has been the American Union,’ the London Times observed, ‘that men who saw its rise may live to see its fall.’ ”
