About the Vostok 1 – With R-7 Rocket:
The post-World War II era saw the advancement of rocket technology based on German research during the war. Several countries set out to design rockets as Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) to deliver weapons of mass destruction. The Soviet Union deployed the R-7 series as their primary ICBM, but they later used the rocket for a different purpose: space travel. In 1961, the Vostok 1 capsule delivered by the R-7 rocket enabled Yuri Gagarin to be the first person to successfully orbit the Earth and return safely. Roughly 60 short years after Kitty Hawk and the first flight, human beings travelled into space. Anyone living during this time could have very well seen both the first airplanes and the first person in space.

A veteran of both world wars, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel was a talented commander and known for his brilliant use of armor. Nicknamed “The Desert Fox”, Rommel was highly respected by both his colleagues and enemies. Although poorly supplied, Rommel eluded Allied commanders in North Africa and punished the inexperience of American troops. Rommel was popular among the German people during the war and still remains a popular figure today.

The Nebelwerfer, which means “smoke thrower”, was a rocket launcher used by the Nebeltruppen. The launcher was portable and had a range of 6,900 metres (7,500 yd). Its six barrels could be fired simultaneously. The Nebeltruppen functioned like the US Army’s Chemical Corps, using launchers to throw smoke, poison gas, and explosive weapons into enemy territory. Almost five and a half million 15 cm rockets and six thousand launchers were manufactured over the course of the war. The American soldiers in Sicily named the gun the “Screaming Mimi”, referencing the loud scream-like quality of the incoming artillery.
(Kit includes Nebelwerfer 41 only, Minifigure Sold Separately, Additional LEGO Elements for display only)

The FlaK 38 was a 20mm automatic cannon used by German anti-aircraft units throughout World War II. It was the primary German light anti-aircraft gun and the most produced German artillery piece throughout the war. While designed for anti-aircraft use, its high rate of fire (220 rpm) proved deadly against enemy infantry and light armor. The FlaK 38 made prominent appearances in the movies Saving Private Ryan, U-571, Valkyrie and Red Tails.

The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the primary single-seat fighter plane used by Germany during World War II. Developed in the 1930’s to fulfill the fighter / interceptor role, it incorporated all of the features that would be considered state-of-the art for World War II. An all-metal mono-plane with a fully enclosed canopy, the Bf 109 would see continual upgrades as technology advanced and it’s roles increased on the battlefield and in the skies. The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was widely produced and saw service for two decades after the close of World War II.

Among German troops, some of the best divisions were comprised of mounted units. Although it may seem odd in the modern day, horses were still used during the Great War to move soldiers into key positions on the battlefield. Given the stalemate of the Western Front, German lancers were more often deployed on the Eastern Front against Russia.
