Introduced in 1959, the M155 MUTT (Multi Utility Tactical Truck) was the replacement for the Korean War vintage M38 Jeep. More spacious than previous Jeeps, it was also the first to have coil spring suspension, offering a smoother ride over rough terrain. In 1971, a specially designed variant, called the M825, was introduced that served as a gun carrier for the M40 Recoilless Rifle. The M40 was essentially a large bazooka that could fire both anti-tank and high explosive rounds. The M155 and the M825 served with distinction in the Vietnam War and was subsequently replaced in US inventory when the Humvee was introduced in the 1980s.
