The M1 40mm Anti-Aircraft Gun is an automatic cannon designed for medium range anti-aircraft defense. It’s high explosive shells packed much more stopping power than smaller caliber weapons and the automatic feed was fast and reliable. Water-cooled variants were mounted on all US Navy warships in single, dual and quad mounts from 1042 well into the 1950s. The M1 40mm Anti-Aircraft gun was regularly referred to as the “Bofors Gun” after the Swedish company that designed the original weapon.

This model builds the towed version of the M1 40mm Anti-Aircraft was typical for American anti-aircraft units in all theaters of operations in World War II, used by both the US Army and the US Marines. It would common by towed into position by a CCKW truck, halftrack or other prime-move. It’s cruciform base would then unfolded and wheels jacked up for firing. It could also be fired while in the wheels-down position, but with far less accuracy.
