The M1 40mm Anti-Aircraft cannon (referred to as the “Bofors” after its Swedish designer) was the US military’s most effective medium range automatic anti-aircraft gun of World War II. While it was intended for anti-aircaft use, there are plenty of documented cases where it’s awesome firepower was leveled at targets on the ground.
