Background of the Avenger AN/TWQ-1 HMMWV
The Avenger is a mobile, short-range anti-aircraft system mounted on the M998 and M1097 HMMWV chassis. Its primary mission is to provide mobile protection against cruise missiles, helicopters and low-flying fixed wing aircraft. It is armed with two pods of four Stinger ground-to-air missiles, plus a coaxal .50 cal M3P Mahcine Gun for secondary armament. The Avenger has a built-in infra-red tracking system and laser ranger-finder, but can also be subordinated to fire on cue from the Forward Area Air Defense Command, Control, Communications and Intelligence (FAAD C3I) system. The Avenger was first successfully deployed during Operation Desert Storm and has subsequently been used by US forces in Bosnia, Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom. More than 1000 Avengers have been built since the late 1980’s and several variants have been deleloped during the proceeding years.
