They Fought To Liberate and To End Conquest: Marking the 74th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion

One of the climatic scenes of the Second World War, the D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944 is still remembered today for the bravery and heavy sacrifice by American, British, and Canadian troops. Both in the air and on the ground, men struggled to wrestle Western Europe away from the grip of Nazism. A logistical phenomenon, the invasion coordinated thousands of warships, planes, landing craft, and men to storm the beaches of Normandy.

This year marks the 74th anniversary of this historic event. The generation that fought the war is fading away. It is our obligation to preserve the memory of this momentous episode for future generations. By remembering those who gave their lives to defeat tyranny and oppression, we are reminded that liberty often comes at a great price.

“They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate.”

– President Franklin D. Roosevelt, radio broadcast, June 6, 1944
