The French firm Dassault Aviation developed the Mirage V to be a derivative of the highly successful Mirage III. Updates were made to the aircraft’s radar and navigation systems, which were modified to make room for 32% more fuel capacity, as well as hardpoints to increase the maximum bombload. The result was a cheaper to manufacture aircraft that could easily be exported to air forces around the world. In 1966, the Israeli military put an order in for 50 of Dassault’s newest craft. However, as tensions increased in Israel and surrounding nations, the government of France issued an embargo the following year. Even though Israel could not obtain the aircraft directly from the French firm, they did obtain the blueprints and were able to manufacture the aircraft internally, designated the IAI Nesher.
By 1980, Israel had sold 35 of their Neshers to Argentina, who renamed them “Dagger.” The Argentinian Daggers were fast and well-armed, but lacked aerial refueling and electronic countermeasures. Despite the courage of Argentinian pilots, their lack of experience and Britain’s advanced ground-to-air and air-to-air missiles led to the loss of 12 Daggers during the Falklands War.
