About the Mark A “Whippet” – WWI Medium Tank:
Eight miles per hour may not sound fast, but the Medium Tank Mk A “Whippet” was the fastest tank on the field in 1917. Armed with three to four Hotchkiss machine guns and manned by a crew of three, the Whippet presented a new opportunity for Allied forces to break through the stalemate that had plagued military commanders for several years.
Much like other tanks during the Great War, the Whippet was primitive in design. Each tread had its own engine, which required the driver to perform a complicated juggling act of operating two clutch pedals at the same time. The tank would often fill with fumes from the engine, requiring the crew to wear gas masks. Tanks often broke down, forcing their crews to abandon the vehicle and making them easy targets for German field guns.
Nonetheless, the tank performed well in wreaking havoc behind enemy lines. One such example was a Whippet named “Musical Box”, commanded by Lieutenant C. B. Arnold. Arnold took his Whippet behind German lines and went on a nine-hour rampage, harassing supply vehicles and attacking groups of retreating infantry. The positioning of the machine guns allowed the Whippet to engage enemy troops from almost all angles. The lack of effective anti-tank weapons made destroying these tanks difficult for the Germans.
The kit features an early war red-and-white pattern. The WWI British Tanker minifigure features an odd-looking chain-mail mask. This medieval-style mask helped protect the crew from flying, red-hot shrapnel caused by enemy machine gun fire.

About the Panzer I:
The Panzer I was a light tank produced in Germany in the 1930s. Design started in 1932 and mass production began in 1934. Intended only as a training tank to introduce the concept of armored warfare to the German Army, the Panzer I saw combat in Spain during the Spanish Civil War. The Panzer I would also see action in Poland, France, and the Soviet Union and North Africa during World War II. By 1942, the Panzer I chassis design was used as the basis of tank destroyers and assault guns.
The Panzer I’s performance in combat was limited by its thin armor and light armament of two machine guns. The Panzer I was unable to engage in effective combat, struggling against vehicles such as the Soviet T-23. Since they were obsolete from their introduction, the Panzer I chassis was adapted as tank destroyers and other variants.

About the X-15 Rocket Plane:
In a joint project between NASA and the United States Air Force, the X-15 program was intended to provide high speed flight research. Much of this research was used in the design of both modern-day fighter jets and by the American space program in building its spacecraft. Data collected helped NASA build better launch vehicles in programs ranging from Mercury to the Space Shuttle.
The X-15 project lasted nearly ten years. In this time, 199 flight missions were conducted. Due to the high fuel consumption during the test flights, the X-15 was launched from a “mothership”, which was a B-52. The rocket plane deployed when the B-52 reached 500 mph and the X-15 burned its engines for 80-120 seconds, propelling the craft to extremely high speeds and altitudes. The X-15 holds the unofficial records for both speed and altitude: 4,520 mph (Mach 6.7) and 354,200 feet.

About Pioneer 10 – American Space Probe:
Beginning with the first satellite launch with Sputnik in 1957, the next fifteen years proved remarkable for space exploration. The United States put astronauts on the moon in 1969 with Apollo 11. Pioneer 10 marked the first attempt by humanity to send a probe beyond the Asteroid Belt, a region of our solar system that exists between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. This incredible journey sent Pioneer 10 to chart Jupiter, making it the first probe to collect data on the giant planet. This data proved crucial to future missions. The space probe continued its mission for several years, exploring the outer solar system.
Aside from exploring this region of space, Pioneer 10 contained a special plaque. This plaque is made with gold-anodized aluminum and has some unique images etched into it. The plaque was designed by famed astronomer Carl Sagan and Frank Drake, the founder of SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) and author of the Drake Equation. In an attempt to make it intelligible to extraterrestrials, the measurement system was represented as a hydrogen atom (the most abundant element in the universe) in two different energy states. These are assigned to the binary number 1, which is indicated by a small tick mark. This serves as the standard system of measurement on the plaque. Among the images using this measurement: two adult humans, a map of our solar system, and our Sun’s relative position to distant quasars and the center of the Milky Way galaxy at the time of launch.

Most starships would never make it out of spacedock without the help of their chief engineers. Responsible for maintaining and repairing their ships on lengthy multi-year voyages, they are the galaxy’s ultimate problem-solving geniuses. Can he fix an overloading warp coil with nothing more than a roll of molecular-bonding fiber film? Sure, just give him more time and he’ll do it. Unlike others wearing red shirts, his officer stripes mean he is far from disposable.
This Starship Chief Engineer features exclusive custom-printed artwork designed by John Canepa. Includes a BrickArms® overmolded Classic Photon Pistol.
