About the Churchill Crocodile Heavy Tank:
The Churchill Crocodile was a British flame-throwing variant of the Churchill Mark VII tank. They began production in October 1943, in time for the Normandy invasion. From early in the war there had been experiments with mounting flamethrowers on British vehicles. General Percy Hobart saw the Crocodile demonstration in 1943 and pressured the MoS to produce a development plan. Shortly after, the Chief of the General Staff added the flamethrowers to the 79th Division plan.
The flamethrower equipment was produced as a kit that REME workshops could install in the field, converting any available Churchill Mk VII to a Crocodile. The conversion kit included the trailer which held the fuel, an armored pipe fitted along the underside of the tank, and the projector.
With the flamethrower’s short range of up to 120 yards, the Crocodile was a specialized weapon. The fuel burned on water and could be used to set fire to woods and houses. The flamethrower could project a “wet” burst of unlit fuel, which would splash around corners in trenches or strongpoints, and then be ignited with a second burst. It was used so successfully against German bunkers that many surrendered after the first ranging shots.

About the Panther:
The Panther was a German medium tank deployed during WWII on the Eastern and Western fronts in Europe from mid-1943 to the war’s end in 1945. The Panther was intended to counter the Soviet T-34 and to replace the Panzer III and Panzer IV. Nevertheless, it served alongside the Panzer IV and the heavier Tiger I until the end of the war. It is considered one of the best tanks in WWII for its excellent firepower and protection, though its reliability was less impressive.
The Panther was a compromise. While having essentially the same engine as the Tiger I, it had more efficient frontal hull armor, better gun penetration, was lighter and faster, and could traverse through rough terrain better than the Tiger I. The trade-off was weaker side armor, which made it vulnerable to flanking fire. In addition, the Panther was far cheaper to produce than the Tiger I, and only slightly more expensive than the Panzer IV. Despite being classified as a medium tank by the Germans, it was known as a heavy tank to the Allied forces due to its thick armor, powerful gun, and weight similar to the heavy tanks used by the Allied nations.

Background on the LCVP:
The LCVP was landing boat designed and manufactured by Higgins Industries and was used extensively by US forces, during the myriad of amphibious landings during World War II. The LCVP was 36 feet in length, had a shallow draft, and had a ramp at the bow ramp that spanned the entire width of the hull. During an amphibious landing, it would be lowered into the sea from a larger ship, where troops would descend into the boat via cargo net lowered down the ship’s side. LCVP could carry a platoon of 36 combat troops or a small vehicle such as a jeep to shore, thus earning the designation Landing Craft Vehicle, Personnel. The LCVP was armed with two .30 caliber Browning machine guns and was manned by a crew of four. The boat was constructed mainly of plywood, with the steel bow ramp serving as the main armor protection against shore fire. Its 225 horsepower diesel engine pushed the LCVP to 12 knots. The boat’s shallow draft meant it could be beached directly on short, the ramp lowered for troops or vehicles to rapidly disgorge. The LCVP would then back away from shore and return to its mother ship for another load. With more than 20,000 LCVP made during the war, it was undoubtedly one of the crucial items that helped deliver the Allied victory in Europe and Asia.
