We just returned from an eventful trip down to Birmingham, AL for BrickFair, AL 2013 last weekend. Birmingham is about a 16 hour drive from Minneapolis, but we found ourselves stuck for 7 hours in a weather-related traffic jam less than 75 miles from our destination. In addition to our store, we brought four displays to BFAL: The Vietnam War Diorama, Landing Ship Tank, Bates Motel, and Highland Keep. On Friday we made a day trip down to Mobile for a visit to the USS Alabama memorial. We spent all afternoon exploring the ship and ran out of time to see the rest of the displays.

The GMC CCKW 2 1/2 ton 6×6 Truck was hands down the workhorse of the US military’s overland logistics service and one of the most curcial pieces of hardware in the Allied aresnal during World War II. The famous “deuce and a half” saw service on all continents with hundreds of thousands being made during the war. This is a later-production “long bed” cargo verson has canvas cab roof and doors (the metal roof was removed in order to double the amount that could be stacked in the holds of trans-oceanic cargo ships) and would have been the most common type in the field during the war.
