About the Panzer VIII Maus:
The Panzer VIII Maus was a German WWII super-heavy tank completed in late 1944. It is the heaviest fully enclosed armored fighting vehicle ever built. Five were originally ordered, but only two hulls and one turret were completed before the testing grounds were captured by the advancing Soviet forces. These two prototypes – one with, and the other without a turret – underwent trials in late 1944. The Maus’ main armament was the Krupp-designed 128 mm KwK 44 L/55 gun, based on the 12.8 cm Pak 44 anti-tank field artillery piece which was used in the casemate-type Jagdiger tank destroyer. The 128 mm gun was powerful enough to destroy all Allied armored fighting vehicles then in service, some at ranges exceeding 3,500 m.
The principle problem in the design of the Maus was developing an engine and drivetrain which was powerful enough to propel the tank, yet small enough to fit inside it. The drive train was electrical, designed to provide a maximum speed of 12 mph and a minimum speed of 0.93 mph. However, during actual field testing the maximum speed achieved on hard surfaces was 8.1 mph with full motor field. The vehicle’s weight made it unable to utilize most bridges, instead it was intended to ford to a depth of 6 ft 7 in, or submerge up to a depth of 26 ft 3 in and use a snorkel to cross rivers. The Maus was intended to punch holes through enemy defenses in the manner of an immense “breakthrough tank”, whilst taking almost no damage to any components. There is a captured Maus prototype on display by the Kubinka Tank Museum in Russia.

About the M3A1:
The M3A1 Half-track was the main troop transport vehicle for the US Army armored infantry during World War II and the Korean War. The M3A1 Half-track was designed to carry an entire rifle squad and their equipment (they would often tow a trailer with equipment, fuel, water or ammunition). The M3A1 was fitted with an armored “pulpit” mount for its M2HB heavy machine gun and had three pintle mounts for additional machine guns. The M3A1 was the most advanced version of personnel carriers of the M3 Halftrack family, of which more than 40,000 of all types were manufactured during World War II.

About the X-Craft British Minisub:
The X-Craft was a WWII midget submarine class built for the Royal Navy during 1943-1944. Known individually as X-Craft, the vessels were designed to be towed to their intended area of operations by a full-size ‘mother’ submarine with a passage crew on board. Once the attack was over, the X-Craft would rendezvous with the towing submarine and then be towed home. Range was limited primarily by the endurance and determination of their crews, but was thought to be up to 14 days in the craft or 1,500 miles.
This specific variant was deployed during September 1943’s Operation Source to neutralize the heavy German warships based in Northern Norway. Six X-craft were used, but only two successfully laid charges; the rest were lost, scuttled or returned to base. This was the only multiple X-craft attack. X-Craft made additional attacks on German targets in Norway and helped survey the beaches for the Allied landings at Normandy. The remains of two XT-class craft are present on the beach at Aberlady Bay in East Lothian, Scotland. One X24 is available to view at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in the United Kingdom.

About the V-1 Flying Bomb:
The V-1 Flying Bomb was an early cruise missile and the first to use a pulsejet for power. It was developed at Peenemünde Army Research Center by the German Luftwaffe during WWII. Due to its limited range, the thousands of V-1 missiles launched into England were fired from launch facilities along the French and Dutch coasts. At its peak, more than one hundred V-1s a day were fired at Southeast England. A total of 9,521 were fired, decreasing in number until the last V-1 site in range of Britain was overrun by allied forces in October 1944.
As part of Operation Crossbow, the British operated an arrangement of air defenses including anti-aircraft guns and fighter aircraft, to intercept the bombs before they reached their targets. During this time, launch sites and underground V-1 storage depots were targets of strategic bombing.
