This Vietnam Helo Pilot is another one of Lando’s custom minifigures!
NOTES FROM THE DESIGNER: I was tasked with putting together simple artwork for a Vietnam-era helicopter pilot. Upon delving into my source material what stuck out to me were the US Air Cavalry pilots who flew the Cobra gunships. Originally we were planning on outfitting the minifigure in a simple one-piece jumpsuit, but after going over lots of source images, I started seeing pictures of pilots wearing a two piece Nomex flight suit. This suit wasn’t nearly as common as its one-piece counterpart and it was made using newly developed fireproof material. I thought that was a really interesting piece for the time and I’m happy to have this part of the final design. Additionally, I’ve equipped this pilot with all leather combat boots. While unpopular with the grunts on the ground, pilots tended to favor them due to their fire-resistant nature. Finally, I’ve put an Air Cavalry patch on the shoulder. If you look closely you can see the horse head has been LEGO-ized.

About the M48 Patton MBT:
The M48 Patton was a main battle tank designed and produced in the United States in 1952. It was a further development of the M47 Patton tank, and served in the U.S. Army and Marine Corps as the primary battle tank in South Vietnam. The M48 Patton was the last U.S. tank to mount the 90mm gun with future tanks upgrading to the 105mm gun. It was in service from 1953-1990s in the United States. The Turkish Army currently has the largest number of modernized M48 MBTs with more than 1,400 in its inventory.
The M48 saw extensive action during the Vietnam War with over 600 being deployed. Initial M48s landed with the US Marine 1st and 3rd tank Battalions in 1965. It performed admirably in Vietnam in the infantry-support role, but there were few actual tank versus tank battles. They were later used to sweep for mines in what was called the “Thunder Run” – essentially quickly moving through the land in an attempt to find any possible mines before American troops pushed forward each morning. Mines that struck the M48 rarely totaled the tank. The worst damage would usually be a lost wheel or two.

The tank was developed during World War I to help defeat the bloody stalemate of trench warfare of the Western Front. The Renault FT was a light tank to be used in a breakthrough and exploitation role and was equipped with either a low-velocity artillery piece or machine gun. It’s two-man crew consisted of a driver and tank commander, who doubled as the tank’s gunner. Over 3000 FTs were built in France during World War I where it was successfully used by both French and American armored forces. A copy of the FT was manufactured in the USA under license and was standardized as the M1917. The American version can be easily distinguished by the location of the muffler to the left side of the hull, whereas the original French version had the muffler located on the right. The Renault FT has the distinction of setting the pattern for future tank development: fully tracked vehicle with engine located in the rear, and a single fully-rotating turret.
