About “Big Bertha”

Big Bertha was a WWI heavy siege gun manufactured on the eve of the war, by Krupp in Germany. It’s a type of super-heavy howitzer that provided Germany with a way to shell and destroy enemy lines and forts. Big Berta’s history started with the newer version of the 30.5-cm Beta-Gerat howitzer. There, the Germans wanted vastly superior offensive power, and had Krupp create the Gamma-Gerat howitzer. This was Big Bertha, but mounted on a stationary carriage that was emplaced in a concrete foundation. It was so difficult to move that the APK asked Krupp for a more mobile version, and thus, Big Bertha was delivered in June 1914.

Krupp and Daimler developed a tractor for the Bertha to tow the guns, which were broken down into five loads when on the road. Big Bertha gained a strong reputation on both sides of the lines due to its early successes in smashing the forts at Liege. A total of 12 complete M-Gerats were built before the war, and 10 more were built during the war. As the war ground on, several Berthas were destroyed when their barrels burst due to faulty ammunition. Two Big Berthas were captured by the US Army at the end of the war.

Restock: Easy Eight M4A3E8 Sherman

2051-promo-710

“Easy Eight” was the nickname for the final World War II production model of the famous American Sherman Tank. It’s official designation is the M4A3E8(76)W which denotes the following features: Welded steel hull, Ford GAA V8 gasoline engine, horizontal volute spring suspension, 23-inch wide tracks, 76mm main gun in a T-23 turret, and “wet” ammunition stowage. While never designed to battle heavy German armor, this model was far more capable than the original Sherman tanks rolled out just three years earlier. The “Easy Eight” was the only Sherman to remain in American service following World War II and it would see further action on the Korean Peninsula supporting UN forces. The “Easy Eight” was also the basis of the famous Israeli “Super Shermans” which saw action well into the 1970’s. More than 49,000 Sherman Tanks were built during World War II. Many thousands were distributed to the Allies through the Lend-Lease program.

Restock: M1 Abrams

829-m1-abrams-action-webcard-710

The M1 Abrams is the current main battle tank (MBT) used by the United States Army, US Marine Corps and several allied nations around the world. It is named after General Creighton Abrams, former Chief of Staff of the US Army (1972-1974), commander of operations in Vietnam War (1968-1972) and decorated regimental commander in Patton’s Third Army during World War II.

The origins of the M1 date back to a joint US / German main battle tank program during the 1970s. While this project was eventually canceled,  the technology developed was used in the German Leopard II and the American M1 Abrams MBTs. The M1 Abrams introduced many innovative features such as an aircraft turbine powerpack, composite “Chobham” armor, and ammunition stowage separated from the crew compartment. When the Abrams’ original 105mm rifled main gun barrel was replaced with the 120mm smooth bore gun developed for the Leopard II, the tank was then re-designated the M1A1. A program to further improve the Abrams was introduced in 1992 and the designation was again changed to M1A2. Improvements included separate thermal sights for the commander and various technological upgrades.

The Abrams was first combat tested in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm, where it outperformed any of the Russian-supplied equipment of the Iraqi Army. Improvements continue to be made to the Abrams  to keep up with technological advances and different battlefield conditions.

Restock: PaK 38

2083-Action-Webcard-710.jpg

The Pak 38 5cm Anti-Tank Gun was developed as a response to shortcomings found in the Pak 36 3.7cm AT Gun used during the Spanish Civil War. It was put into mass production in 1939 for the Wehrmacht and proved to be one of the few anti-tank weapons capable of penetrating the armor of the T-34 tanks. While larger anti-tank guns would be introduced, the Pak 38 continued to be useful for the remainder of the war due to its small size and good ballistic performance.

Additional information about this Brickmania custom Lego® kit:

  • Gun is posable with a limited range of elevation

  • Can be towed behind any vehicle with a hook type hitch

Restock: SdKfz 250

2092-action-webcard-710

The SdKfz 250 was a light armored troop-carrying halftrack used by Germany during World War II. Its angular shape was similar in appearance to the larger SdKfz 251 “Hanomag” halftrack. This smaller vehicle used in roles where there was no need for larger halftrack, such as scouting, forward artillery observers, headquarters, communications, etc. The original Ausf A version featured a complex angled hull, open top crew compartment, a single entry door at the rear of the vehicle, and was armed with a single MG34 machine gun. The SdKfz 250 was just beginning to reach frontline units as the invasion of the Soviet Union began. Production of the SdKfz 250 would continue throughout the remainder of the war and later versions would have a simplified hull shape as well as numerous variations of weapons systems, communications gear, etc. Over 6500 of the SdKfz 250 would be built before the end of the war.
