As World War I raged in Europe, the US Army found itself in need of a modern artillery piece should America decide to become involved. The French 75mm Modele 1897 was the best candidate and is widely considered by historians to be the first modern cannon. It was the first to be fitted with a hydropneumatic recoil mechanism, which meant it could be fired and reloaded without having to reposition the gun. When America entered the war, the US Army adopted the French design for it’s field artillery batteries, and fielded more than 1900 guns by the war’s end. Domestic production began in spring of 1918, but most guns used during the war were French manufactured. The M1897 again saw service in World War II, with many being exported to Great Britain under lend-lease agreements, and others being adapted to anti-tank guns.

The French 75mm Field Gun (“Matériel de 75mm Mle 1897”) is widely considered to be the first modern artillery piece. Adopted by the French army in 1897, it was the first gun to be equipped with a hydro-pneumatic recoil system, which allowed the gun to be fired in place without re-aiming between each round. Other advanced features included a quick-operating screw breech mechanism and singe piece ammunition (warhead attached to a propellent-filled brass “shell” casing). A well trained 75mm crew could fire at the incredible rate of 30 rounds per minute. Originally designed to deliver shrapnel rounds against large infantry formations, the battle conditions of World War I saw the adaptation of high explosive and chemical warheads. In addition to being the main artillery piece of the French Army, more than 2000 were supplied to the American Expeditionary Force during World War I (officially named the M1897 in American service). There was also a truck-mounted anti-aircraft version of this versatile weapon. Modernized versions of the 75mm Mle 1897 saw combat during World War II.

About the StuG III:
The Sturmgeschütz III (StuG III) is a direct-fire infantry support vehicle used by the German army in World War II. It was the result of lessons learned in the First World War. The Germans saw the need for pinpoint artillery fire to break up enemy strong points such as machine gun nests and fortifications encountered by advancing infantry.
The first prototype Stürmgeschutz vehicles were manufactured in 1937, based on the hulls of the newly-designed Panzer III chassis. Early marks of the StuG III (Ausf A-D) featured a 7.5cm short-barrel howitzer mounted in a low casement rather than a tank-like turret. The vehicles were quickly put into full production. The first Stürmartillerie battalions were formed from troops taken from regular army artillery units.
The StuG III first saw action during the invasion of Poland in 1939 and would continue service throughout the war. It became the most widely produced armored vehicle used by the Wehrmacht and saw several upgrades and improvements.
When more heavily armored Russian tanks were encountered, such as the T-34 and KV-1, a long barrel, high velocity gun was introduced starting with Ausf F series in 1942. From this point onwards, the StuG III’s role increasingly shifted from assault artillery to that of a tank destroyer.

The M4 Sherman was the workhorse medium tank of US and western Allied forces during World War II. Armed with a multi-purpose 75mm gun that could fire both high-explosive and anti-tank rounds, it ruled the battlefield when first introduced. Even though the Sherman would later prove inferior in firepower and armor to heavier German Panther and Tiger Tanks, it’s superior mobility, reliability and ease of manufacture proved to be a wartime winner.
