Restock: Fokker Dr. 1

411-promo-710

“Death to the Red Baron!” cried Snoopy, as he piloted his Sopwith Camel
doghouse into battle against his arch nemesis. . .

With this recurring combat in the frames of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts, the Red Baron’s name gained a permanent familiarity. Yet this renowned red flying machine was first made legendary by the ferocity and skill of Germany’s most celebrated WWI fighter pilot, Manfred von Richthofen, better known as the Red Baron – a name that would become synonymous with the red plane itself.

As the ace’s reputation grew, the sight of the blazing red Fokker Dr. I instilled both fear and awe into the hearts of its allied enemies. The Fokker’s light body and triplane wings made it adept at stunt flying, with its daring pilots diving and looping its steel tube, wood and fabric frame through the sky with ease. Yet the Baron himself was well known for emphasizing coordination and formation flying, and for precise combat tactics that lead he and his men to many of their combat victories – an approach that earned them the nickname the ‘flying circus.’

The WWI introduction of air power added a whole new dimension to battle; but with a maximum speed of 185 km/h at sea level (115 mph at sea level), the Fokker would soon be outstripped by faster craft in the following years. However, in the fall of 1917 and the spring of 1918, it was indispensable in the wartime skies.

About the Mark V

The Mark V was a British WWI heavy tank, deployed in 1918 and primarily used in action during the closing months of WWI. The initial intention was for the Mark V to be a completely new design of tank, but parts to craft it didn’t become available in time, so it ended up being an upgraded Mark IV. The Mark V had more power from a new Ricardo engine, and only needed one driver thanks to the new Wilson epicyclical steering gear.

The first tanks arrived in France in May 1918. Four hundred were built, 200 each of Males and Females. The “Males” were armed with 6-pounder guns and machine guns, while the “Females” came with machine guns only. The Mark V was first used in the Battle of Hamel, on the 4th of July 1918. It went on to take part in eight major offensives before the end of the War.

About the Rolls-Royce Armored Car:

The Rolls-Royce Armored Car was a British vehicle developed in 1914 and used in WWI and the early parts of WWII. Six RNAS Rolls-Royce squadrons were formed of 12 vehicles each – one going to France, and one to Africa to fight German colonies. They were poorly suited to the muddy trench filled battlefields of the Western Front, but were able to operate in the Near East.

They were also used by the Turkish forces and seen by Lawrence of Arabia as more valuable than rubies – helping to win his revolt in the desert.  At the outbreak of WWII, 76 vehicles were still in service. They were used during the operation of Western Desert in Iraq and Syria. By the end of 1941, they were withdrawn from frontline service as more modern armored vehicles became available..

New Release: Sopwith Camel (2016 Edition)

416-sopwith-action-webcard-710

About the Sopwith Camel:

The Sopwith Camel was a British WWI single-seat biplane fighter aircraft originally introduced on the Western Front in 1917. It used a rotary engine and included twin synchronized machine guns. It was incredibly difficult to handle and took a skilled pilot to operate the craft. Camel pilots were credited with shooting down an estimated 1,294 enemy aircraft; more than any other allied fighter of the conflict. It served as a ground-attack aircraft, especially towards the end of the war, when it became outclassed in air-to-air roles.

An important role of the Sopwith Camel was night fighting and home defense. The RNAS flew Camels from Eastchurch and Manston airfields against daylight raids by German bombers. A number of Camels were more extensively modified with the Vickers machine guns being replaced by overwing Lewis guns, and the cockpit being moved rearwards so the pilot could reload the guns. This modification became known as the “Sopwith Comic”, and allowed the guns to be fired without affecting the pilot’s night vision.
